The W20's Chassis is a (spec needed) thick, aluminum enclosure designed to isolate the internal electronics from outside RF interference. A left-oriented main power button, and four playback control buttons (Playlist, Play/Pause, Skip Back, Skip Forward) flank two 3.7" AMOLED front panel displays. All of this is supported by (spec needed) thick feet with absorptive cork padding.
2. Power Supply
The W20 uses a unique combination of a switch-mode power supply (SMPS) to provide current to the computer hardware (CPU and main board, HDD and SSD power), along with a bank of six (6) lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries to provide isolated, pure DC current for the Audio Output board, which also act as an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) during a power outage.
3. CPU and Main Board
The W20's Main (base) Board has been custom engineered and manufactured with audio-only playback in mind, and includes two (2) USB 2.0 data ports for external media and/or WiFi access point connectivity via a supported USB WiFi adapter, along with a Gigabit (1000mbps) Ethernet connection. An RGB-type analog video connection is output from the main board to the front panel AMOLEDs. Early serial numbers do not include an internally installed USB 2.0 Flash Recovery disk, whereas later models do. Isolation from external noise and interference, use of high-tolerance parts, and attention to signal ground have all been taken into consideration in the design.
The CPU board is a custom-manufactured, AMD based platform with a low-power, 1.0 GHz (verify spec) main processor using a (bridge chipset information) utilizing 4GB (verify spec) of (spec) DDR RAM. The use of a low-power CPU and RAM dedicated to playback of audio only minimizes interferences from noise generated by CPU and RAM.
The W20's hard disk storage is currently two (2) 6TB hard disk drives (HDDs, 12TB total storage) in a custom milled separate aluminum housing designed to minimize mechanical and electromagnetic noise and interference when the disks are active. Appropriate 8TB HDDs may be substituted for the provided 6TB disks (contact an authorized dealer or distributor for more information). A 240GB Solid State Drive (SSD) is used for caching local files for playback and also runs the customized Linux OS and playback software.
5. Audio Board
The W20's Audio Board is truly unique in the world of high-end computer audio playback. Internally, audio is clocked in a phase-locked loop (PLL) using I²S referenced to a low-jitter, oven-controlled crystal oscillator (OCXO) using a custom programmed and implemented field-programmable gate array (FPGA) chipset. This low-jitter, internally clocked data is fed to a suite of low-jitter, SPDIF output circuits for connecting to high-performance DACs - Coaxial BNC and RCA, Toslink Optical, and Balanced AES/EBU outputs are all provided. A second AES/EBU output is also provided, allowing end users to split the right and left channel digital data for the appropriate Dual AES/EBU capable DAC hardware, along with an external Word Clock input which overrides the already superlative OCXO circuit, for those end users seeking the ultimate in digital audio performance. Further, the specially designed and filtered USB Audio output has been designed to minimize interference due to ground currents and other electronically induced noise sources.
